The Railway Sleeper Colchester BLOG

w/e 19th July 2010

Here at The Railway Sleeper we are constantly trying to make improvements to what we can offer and be even better value for money.

We have just recently installed shower gel dispensers in all the ensuite showers meaning that if you have forgotten to bring any you wont have to worry as there is no a good quality product there already.

Over the coming months we are looking to make a number of other improvements to the rooms as we are aiming to offer the best possible stay for the business person, contractor or tourist all for the same great value for money price. We welcome feedback and suggestions from guests so please dont hesitate to let us know if you have and idea or request and we will see what we can do.

Fancy a break from the football? Well it looks like we got one anyway with England's dismal exit from the World Cup and just in case Wimbledon isn't your thing, why not take a trip to westwood Park's Summer Fair this Saturday & Sunday 3rd & 4th July.

This is a new event at the home of Suffolk Punches north of Colchester. This combines an opening of the beautiful gardens with a traditional weekend for the family and a chance to meet the farm's animals. On the Sunday you can even bring your dog to the Companion Dog Show and have a go yourself.

I think the weather forecast is ok too. For more information visit www.oakleighfairs.co.uk/westwood.

This weekend's food and drink festival in Castle Park looks set to be the best ever. Highlights include rare breed meats, Mersea oysters and a new Dakota ale from brewer Shepherd Neame. The festival opens Saturday and Sunday from 10.30am - 4pm.

Here at The Raillway Sleeper we have been making some exciting changes to our breakfast menu. The selection includes kippers, paninis, omelettes, a wide selection of hot toasted sandwiches as well as a superb full English breakfast. We cater for vegetarians and vegans and stock alternatives such as soya milk.

With the World Cup in full swing and Father's Day this weekend there should be plenty to cheer about. I am pretty sure England will steadily improve and as one commentator said recently "they're not good enough yet to be knocked out". Who knows, they might yet make the final.

Good news for Colchester shoppers is the announcement this week that from 30th June until 24th August a number of top stores in the town have agreed to trial late night opening on Wednesdays until 7pm. Names includings M&S, William & Griffin and Debenhams are taking part. Other developments to look out for are the extension of Top Man and Top Shop into a combined bigger store in Culver Walk. Also great to hear that Colchester's only Pie & Mash shop will be opening in Red Lion Yard.

For the party animals amongst you, Route night club will be staying out until 3am on Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights in an attempt to compete with the many bars open late.

Happy World Cup watching or if footie is not your thing, Wimbledon starts Monday.

World Cup 2010

I am sure this weekend many of you like us will be looking forward to the start of the World Cup and in particular this Saturday's match at 7.30pm between England & USA. Why not watch what will hopefully be a great match in one of Colchester's many fine bars. We may even have good enough weather to watch it al fresco!

We would like to extend our thanks to the many guests of our who have posted such positive reviews both on google maps and the Trip Advisor sites. These comments are not only greatly appreciated but help us to concentrate on what customers really want. To that end we are constantly updating our breakfast menu and now not only include a traditional great English breakfast but also offer omellettes, paninis and vegetarian options.

Saturday 5th & Sunday 6th June

This weekend is Colchester's Oyster Fayre in Lower Castle Park from 10.30am - 5.30pm each day. This is a traditional medieval fayre with a carefully selected blend of traders, markets stalls and entertainers. This event really offers something for everyone young and old and is well worth a visit. For more information visit www.oysterfayre.flyer.co.uk
